Whirlpool Galaxy (M51)

M51

One of my favorites, a spiral galaxy in Canes Venatici (m8.4, 11x7').
Taken from Copper Breaks State Park, TX 6/2/05 0130CDT.
120 minutes total (9 x 5 min, 15 x 3 min, 20 x 90 sec),
LX200 10" f/6.3, Canon EOS 20D at prime focus, ISO 800.
Dark, flat and bias frame calibration and alignment in ImagesPlus;
levels, curves, cropping and sizing in Photoshop CS.
M51 is interacting with the galaxy NGC 5195 at the top.
There are two mag 17 IC galaxies in the field, at the 10 and 11 o'clock positions.

The Antennae (NGC 4038-4039)

antennae

Interacting galaxies in Corvus (m10.3, 3.5').
Taken from the Texas Star Party 2005, near Fort Davis, TX 5/6/05 2240CDT.
50 minutes total (10 x 5 minute exposures),
LX200 10" f/6.3, Canon EOS 20D at prime focus, ISO 400.
Dark, flat and bias frame calibration and alignment in ImagesPlus;
levels, curves, cropping and sizing in Photoshop CS.
Lousy moist skies, and a somewhat overprocessed image, but I wanted to bring out the
hints of the "antennae" features (or "tadpole tails") -
and to prove there were a few photons at TSP 2005 (which was mostly weathered out).

Omega Centauri (NGC 5139)

omega

Globular Cluster in Centaurus (m3.7, 36'), probably about the nicest one in the sky.
Taken from Copper Breaks State Park, TX 5/14/05 2355CDT.
Kind of a quick shot, 15 minutes total (5 x 3 minute exposures),
LX200 10" f/6.3, Canon EOS 20D at prime focus, ISO 400.
Dark, flat and bias frame calibration and alignment, and Richardson-Lucy
deconvulution in ImagesPlus; levels, curves, cropping and sizing in Photoshop CS.

Spindle Galaxy (NGC 4565)

spindle

Edge-on spiral galaxy in Coma Berenices (m9.6, 15'x2').
Taken from Copper Breaks State Park, TX 5/15/05 0045CDT.
Running out of telescope and camera batteries, time, and clear skies simultaneously,
this became a grab-and-go shot, with only 15 minutes total (3 x 5 minute exposures),
NGC 4562 is also visible as a haze in the lower right corner.

M81 and M82

m81-m82

Spiral Galaxy (m6.8, 26') and Irregular Galaxy (m9.5, 14') in Ursa Major.
Taken from Copper Breaks State Park, TX 1/9/05 0330CST.
My first "real" (tracked long-exposure) astrophotograph. 55 minutes total
(11 x 5 minute exposures), Televue 85 f/7, Canon EOS 20D at prime focus,
ISO 800. Dark and flat frame calibration and alignment in ImagesPlus; levels,
curves, unsharp mask, cropping and sizing in Photoshop CS.

M46 and NGC 2438

M46 + NGC2438

Open Cluster (m6.5, 31') and Planetary Nebula (m10.1, 1.1') in Puppis.
Taken from Copper Breaks State Park, TX 1/11/05 0200CST.
30 minutes total(6 x 5 minute exposures), LX200 10" f/6.3, Canon EOS 20D
at prime focus, ISO 800. Dark and flat frame calibration and alignment in
ImagesPlus; levels, curves, unsharp mask, cropping and sizing in Photoshop CS.
